We went to Beijing from Dezhou. We were there just before the big parade they had, so the Forbidden City was actually forbidden to the public. They were practicing for the parade. We did get to see it from above.
We stayed at the Day's Inn. It was a good hotel in the perfect location; a couple of blocks from a subway station, a few blocks from Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, and a Railroad Museum. We enjoyed ourselves except that both of us ended up getting sick with head colds.
